PACKAGE INTEGRITY / LABORATORY SERVICES

Bubble Leak Testing Service

Bubble emission testing helps identify gross leaks in medical device packaging. ProTech’s laboratory uses ASTM F2096 for this package integrity test. Results can be considered alongside seal strength, aging, and distribution testing when evaluating a packaging system.

What bubble emission testing can show

ASTM F2096 bubble emission testing detects gross leaks in a package. It answers a different question from seal strength testing: bubble emission looks for a leak path, while peel and burst tests assess seal strength. Visual inspection under ASTM F1886 examines seals and the package for visible defects.

Interpret results in light of package construction, test conditions, and agreed acceptance criteria. The method addresses gross leaks; it does not establish every possible package defect or, by itself, demonstrate sterility.

Bubble testing in a validation program

Package integrity may be assessed after stability studies or distribution simulation to see whether the sterile barrier remains intact following those conditions. Bubble emission testing can also help investigate visual observations that may point to a breach.

ProTech’s laboratory services include ASTM F1886 visual inspection, ASTM F88 and ASTM F1140 seal strength testing, and ASTM F1980 accelerated aging. These methods have distinct purposes. The package and validation question determine which tests are appropriate.

Discuss the package, sterilization process, storage period, and distribution conditions before selecting tests for a validation program.

Test method and sample plan

Tell us about the device and package, the question the test should answer, applicable requirements, and your timing. We review the request and prepare a project-specific quote.

Before samples are sent, confirm the method, sample quantity and condition, preparation, and acceptance criteria with our team. Sample needs depend on the agreed testing program.

For the agreed work, ProTech prepares samples, conducts testing, and provides results and recommendations. Review findings against the acceptance criteria and other validation evidence.

Planning your package test

For an initial discussion, describe the packaging materials and format, any prior aging or distribution simulation, and seal concerns. Let us know whether you are developing a new package or investigating an existing design.

Our team can confirm sample preparation, reporting, and scheduling for the proposed work. These details depend on the project scope and are agreed before testing begins.

Bubble leak testing questions

Find out what this test measures and how to prepare samples.

Is bubble emission testing the same as a seal strength test?

No. ASTM F2096 bubble emission testing checks for gross leaks. Peel and burst tests assess seal strength, so they provide different evidence about the package.

Confirm sample quantity and preparation with our team before shipping. The appropriate quantity depends on the agreed testing program and its statistical requirements.

No. A bubble test addresses gross leak detection under the agreed method and criteria. Review the results with other applicable validation evidence and requirements for your device and packaging system.

Discuss your package test

Tell our laboratory team about your packaging materials, prior testing and the concern you want to investigate.
